Why Your AI Upscaled Photo Looks Worse Than the Original

I upscaled a product photo from 400 pixels to 1600 pixels. Instead of a crisp high-res image, I got a blurry mess with weird texture artifacts where smooth surfaces should be. The AI did not fail. I used the wrong settings.

AI image upscaling is not magic. It reconstructs detail based on what it sees. If you give it the wrong input or use the wrong mode, the output looks worse than the original. Here is why that happens and how to avoid it.

Mistake 1: Using Photo Mode on Anime

Photo mode expects natural textures: skin, fabric, foliage. When you feed it line art or anime, it tries to add photographic texture to flat color regions. The result has weird grain on smooth areas and halos around sharp lines. Use Anime mode for illustrations, manga, screenshots of 2D content. The difference is not subtle — Photo mode on anime consistently produces unusable results.

Mistake 2: Upscaling an Already-Bad Image

If the original is so blurry you cannot tell whether an object is a dog or a bush, upscaling it to 4x will give you a very high-resolution image of something that might be a dog or a bush. The AI needs detail to work with. It can reconstruct missing texture from hints. It cannot reconstruct missing detail from nothing.

Counter-intuitive: a moderately sharp image at 2x upscaling often looks better than the same image at 4x. Doubling the resolution gives the AI enough information to work with. Quadrupling it asks the AI to invent more detail than it can plausibly reconstruct.

Mistake 3: Starting With a Compressed JPEG

JPEG compression introduces blocky artifacts. The upscaler interprets these as real image detail and amplifies them. An upscaled JPEG looks like a painting made of small squares. Start with the highest quality source possible. A PNG or high-quality JPEG at the original resolution. The image upscaler can only work with what you give it. Garbage in, high-resolution garbage out.
