You have a photo of a city skyline at sunset. It is a nice photo, but it looks like every other skyline photo. You want it to look like it was painted — maybe in the style of Van Gogh's Starry Night, or a watercolor travel sketch, or a bold graphic novel panel. How style transfer actually works

Style transfer is different from AI image generation. A generator creates an entirely new image from a text prompt — the composition, the subjects, everything is invented. • Good lighting and contrast. Flat, dim, or heavily backlit photos give the AI less structural information to work with. The content structure comes from edges and contrast — more of both means a cleaner result.
• Minimal text. Text in photos (signs, screens, labels) gets distorted by the style transfer. The AI treats text as a texture pattern, not as meaningful characters, and the result is usually illegible.

Step 2: Choose your style reference

This is the most important decision. The reference image determines the entire look of the output. Here is what works:

• Famous paintings work best. Van Gogh, Monet, Picasso, Hokusai — their styles are distinct, consistent, and the AI has seen enough examples to understand them. Starry Night and The Great Wave off Kanagawa are probably the two most-used references, and for good reason: they produce consistently excellent results.
• Single-style references beat mixed ones. A painting that is all one style (all impressionist, all watercolor, all pencil sketch) produces a cleaner result than an image with mixed media or multiple styles.
• Avoid photographs as references. Using a photo as a style reference just transfers one photo's color grading to another — the result looks like a badly color-graded photo, not art. Use actual artwork, illustrations, or textures.
• Texture and pattern images work too. A close-up of oil paint texture, a watercolor wash, a pencil hatching pattern — these produce subtle but beautiful results when you want a hint of style rather than a dramatic transformation.

Step 3: Upload and generate
