Upscaling Images for Print: Getting Sharp Business Cards, Banners, and Posters

You designed a flyer for a 300 dpi press run and the logo you pulled from the web is 900 by 900 pixels. At the size the printer wants, that's about 3 inches — and it needs to fill 8. Scaling it up in the design tool produces a soft, pixelated mess. The fix is to upscale the image before it goes into the layout, and to understand what resolution the job actually requires.

What the Printer Actually Needs

Print is measured in dpi — dots per inch. A photo-heavy poster wants 300 dpi; a large banner viewed from a distance can get away with 72–150 dpi because your eyes forgive it. The math is simple: a 6-inch-wide print at 300 dpi needs 1800 pixels across. Work out the target size first, then upscale with the AI image upscaler to that exact dimension — don't upscale first and crop later.

The Upscaling Workflow

Step 1: decide the final physical size and required dpi, and compute the pixel target. Step 2: run the image through the upscaler to that dimension — AI upscalers do much better than the bicubic resize your design tool uses. Step 3: zoom to 100% and check the edges. Hard edges like text and logos are where upscaling artifacts show first. Step 4: if the source was an old, damaged scan, run the photo restorer first to clean the noise, then upscale — fixing the source before enlarging beats enlarging the problems.

The Counter-Intuitive Part

Bigger isn't always the goal. A logo destined for a business card doesn't need 4x upscaling — it needs the right number of pixels for the card, nothing more. And an upscaler can't invent detail that was never captured; it hallucinates plausible texture. That's fine for photographic grain and terrible for a printed logo with a specific weight. When the subject is stuck on a busy background, strip it first with the background remover and place it clean — a transparent subject upscales more honestly than one locked into a textured scene.
