How to Create Professional Product Photos with AI — No Studio Required

You are selling handmade candles on Etsy. The product is great — soy wax, wooden wicks, scents people love. But your photos are taken on a kitchen counter with overhead fluorescent lighting, and the background includes part of your microwave. The photos are losing you sales.

Professional product photography costs $500-2000 for a batch. A lightbox and DSLR setup costs $300-800 upfront plus learning time. AI tools cost about $3-5 per product and take 5 minutes. Here is the exact workflow.

Step 1: Remove the background (2 seconds)

Take a photo of your product in any decent lighting — natural window light works best, but even office lighting is fine. The key is getting the product itself sharp and well-lit. Do not worry about the background at all.

Option B: AI-generated lifestyle background. Then composite your transparent PNG product on top. This takes longer but creates "in-context" photos that perform better on social media and brand websites.

For Option B, make sure the lighting direction in your generated background matches the lighting on your product. A product lit from the left on a background lit from the right looks subtly wrong, and customers notice even if they cannot articulate why.

The common mistake with transparent PNGs

After removing the background, zoom in to 200% and check the edges. The AI sometimes leaves a 1-2 pixel halo of the original background color around the product. On a white background this is invisible. On a dark or colored background, it glows like a neon outline. Fix it by running the background remover again with a slightly larger detection margin, or manually erase the halo pixels.
