Amazon wants pure white #FFFFFF. eBay accepts light gray. Shopify lets you do whatever. Here are the exact background requirements for every major e-commerce platform.
You remove the background from your product photo, replace it with what looks like white to your eyes (#F5F5F5 — off-white), and upload it to Amazon. Rejected. Amazon requires pure white: #FFFFFF, RGB 255,255,255. Not off-white. Not light gray. Not "looks white on my screen." Pure white, as measured by their automated image checker.
Every e-commerce platform has different image requirements, and getting them wrong means rejected listings, suppressed search rankings, or products that look unprofessional next to competitors. Here are the exact standards.
Amazon's main image requirements: pure white background (RGB 255,255,255, hex #FFFFFF). The product must fill at least 85% of the image frame. No additional objects, props, text, logos, watermarks, or inset images. Minimum 1000 pixels on the longest side (500 pixels for books, music, video).
Amazon enforces these with automated image checking. The system analyzes the background color pixel by pixel. A background that's 254,254,254 (1 off from pure white on each channel) may pass or may fail — the tolerance isn't publicly documented, but experienced sellers aim for exactly 255,255,255 to be safe.
Additional images (slots 2-7) can show lifestyle shots, scale references, and detail views with non-white backgrounds. Only the main image requires pure white.
eBay's requirements: white or light gray background preferred. Pure white not strictly enforced. No borders. No text or logos on the image itself. Minimum 500 pixels on the longest side (1600 pixels recommended for zoom feature).
eBay's enforcement is less automated than Amazon's. The main risk is that listings with poor-quality images rank lower in eBay's Cassini search algorithm, which considers image quality as a relevance signal. A clean white background isn't required but improves search visibility.
Shopify doesn't enforce image requirements — it's your store, your rules. But best practices emerge from what converts: (1) consistent background across all product images (white, light gray, or a consistent brand color — the key is consistency, not the specific color); (2) minimum 2048×2048 pixels for zoom functionality; (3) same aspect ratio for all product images in a collection (usually square 1:1); (4) WebP or AVIF format for faster loading.
Shopify themes typically expect square images. A 3:2 product photo will be cropped or letterboxed depending on the theme — test with your specific theme.
Etsy recommends white or neutral backgrounds but allows lifestyle and contextual photos as the main image. Minimum 1000 pixels on the longest side. Etsy's search algorithm favors listings with multiple high-quality images — 5-10 images per listing is the sweet spot.
Etsy's creative, handmade marketplace culture means that pure white isn't always the best choice. A vintage item photographed on a rustic wooden table may outperform the same item on pure white because it fits the platform's aesthetic expectations.
Google Shopping pulls images from your linked platform (Amazon, Shopify, etc.) and applies that platform's requirements. If you're running Google Shopping ads directly (not through a platform), Google's requirements are: white, gray, or light neutral background, no promotional text or watermarks, minimum 100×100 pixels (but under 250×250, your ads may not serve).
