Why some AI image prompts produce masterpieces and others produce nightmares. A practical guide to writing prompts that get the results you actually want.
You type "a beautiful landscape" into an AI image generator and get back something that looks like a screensaver from 1998. Meanwhile, someone on Reddit posts a photorealistic dragon sipping espresso in a Tokyo alley, and their prompt is 200 words long. What is the difference? Prompt engineering — and it is less mysterious than it sounds.
Our AI image generator uses Stable Diffusion under the hood, and the quality of your output is directly proportional to the quality of your prompt. Here is how to go from "a cat" to something you would actually use.
A strong prompt has four layers. Most beginners stop at layer one.
Layer 1 — Subject: what is in the image. "A cat." Fine, but incomplete. "A Maine Coon cat with grey fur and green eyes." Better. The subject should be specific enough that two different artists would draw roughly the same thing.
Layer 2 — Context and setting: where is the subject? "A Maine Coon cat sitting on a worn leather armchair in a sunlit study." Now the AI has spatial and lighting cues to work with.
Layer 3 — Style and medium: what does it look like? "Oil painting, Rembrandt lighting, chiaroscuro." Or "35mm film photograph, Kodak Portra 400, shallow depth of field." The style descriptor tells the model which part of its training data to sample from.
Layer 4 — Technical parameters: camera specs, lighting specs, composition notes. "85mm lens, f/1.4, golden hour, rule of thirds." These are the cheat codes — the model was trained on photos with EXIF data, so camera terminology maps to specific visual qualities.
Skip layer 2 (no context): the cat floats in an ambiguous void. The model guesses a background, and it guesses wrong half the time.
Skip layer 3 (no style): you get the model's default aesthetic, which is usually "generic digital art with slightly plastic skin." Specifying style is the single biggest quality lever.
Skip layer 4 (no technicals): lighting is flat, composition is centered and boring. Camera specs are a cheat code for composition — "Dutch angle," "leading lines," "negative space" — these are free quality upgrades.
Stable Diffusion supports negative prompts — things you explicitly do not want. Common negative prompts: "blurry, low quality, distorted, extra fingers, bad anatomy, watermark, text, cropped."
If you generate a portrait and the hands look like horror movie props, add "bad hands, mutated fingers" to your negative prompt. It is not a silver bullet — hands are hard for all current models — but it reduces the failure rate.

Beginner prompt (5 words): "A knight fighting a dragon."
Result: a generic fantasy illustration, probably from a weird angle, with a dragon that has three wings and a knight whose sword is merging with the background.
Engineered prompt (60 words): "A weathered knight in dented silver armor facing a massive red dragon in a cavern lit by molten lava, dramatic lighting, low angle shot, sparks flying, 35mm film still, cinematic composition, volumetric lighting, highly detailed, sharp focus."
Result: a dramatic, cinematic scene with clear subject separation, atmospheric lighting from the lava, and a composition that feels like a movie frame. The difference is not subtle — it is the gap between "I made this in an app" and "I would hang this on a wall."
What to avoid: prompts that are too long (300+ words) can confuse the model. It tries to satisfy every detail and ends up satisfying none. 40-80 words is the sweet spot — specific enough to guide the model, not so specific that it drowns.
