Positive prompts tell the AI what to draw. Negative prompts tell it what NOT to draw. Mastering both is the difference between 'almost right' and exactly what you envisioned.
You prompt an AI image generator with "a professional headshot, studio lighting, white background." The result: a person with six fingers on each hand, a third arm emerging from their shoulder, and a background that's white-ish but has a weird gray blob in the corner.
This is where negative prompts earn their place in your workflow. A positive prompt says what you want. A negative prompt says what you don't want — and it's often the difference between "I guess that's close" and "that's exactly what I needed."
In diffusion-based image generation (Stable Diffusion, DALL-E, Midjourney), the AI starts with random noise and gradually refines it toward your prompt. At each step, it steers the image toward concepts that match your positive prompt and away from concepts that match your negative prompt.
Think of it as a magnetic field. The positive prompt pulls the image in one direction. The negative prompt pushes it away from another direction. The final image ends up somewhere in the overlapping zone — close to what you want, far from what you don't.
Negative prompts don't add detail — they remove it. They tell the denoising process "whatever you do, don't make it look like X." This is why negative prompts work best for removing common AI artifacts, not for fine-grained control.
These work across most models and should be in every negative prompt:
Anatomy fixes: extra fingers, fused fingers, too many fingers, distorted hands, bad anatomy, disfigured face, extra limbs, missing arms, missing legs, disconnected limbs. AI is notoriously bad at hands and limbs. These negative prompts reduce (but don't eliminate) hand horror.
Quality fixes: blurry, low resolution, pixelated, jpeg artifacts, grain, noise, watermark, text, signature, username. Removes common low-quality artifacts and prevents the AI from generating watermark-like patterns.
Style avoidance: cartoon, anime, illustration, 3D render, CGI, plastic, doll-like, uncanny valley. Use when you want photorealism. Swap to photorealistic, photograph, realistic, detailed skin texture in the negative prompt when you want illustration.
Portraits: Add harsh shadows, flat lighting, red-eye, glasses glare, double chin, asymmetrical face, crossed eyes.
Landscapes: Add people, cars, buildings, power lines, trash, graffiti, modern architecture if you want pristine nature. Add the opposite if you want urban scenes.
Product photos: Add shadows on product, reflections, dust, scratches, fingerprints, busy background, cluttered, props. Product photography needs to be clean, and the AI defaults to "interesting" which means clutter.
Food photography: Add plastic food, fake, artificial, wilted, discolored, unappetizing, messy plate, dirty table. AI food images tend toward the uncanny — too perfect to be real or slightly wrong in color.
Don't over-negate. A negative prompt with 100+ tokens confuses the model as much as it helps. The AI can't simultaneously avoid everything. Focus on the 5-10 most likely failure modes for your specific image type. And never negate the main subject — "no cat" in the negative prompt of a cat photo will produce nightmare fuel.
