Why 1.5x Is the Sweet Spot for Listening to Articles (and When to Slow Down)

You found the perfect text-to-speech voice, loaded a long article, and pressed play at normal speed. Three minutes in you realize you've absorbed nothing — the narration is slower than your brain, so your mind wandered off. This is the most common TTS failure, and it's not a voice problem; it's a speed problem.

The Speed-Comprehension Curve

Human audiobook narration sits around 150 words per minute, but most people comfortably comprehend synthetic speech faster — often up to double that — because there's no fatigue and no breathing to wait for. The sweet spot for most people on a good text to speech tool is around 1.5x: fast enough that your brain has to keep up, slow enough that nothing falls out. Below it, comprehension drops for a surprising reason — boredom. Your mind fills the gaps with other thoughts.

When Faster Is Wrong

1.5x is the default, not the rule. New vocabulary, dense technical text, numbers, or foreign terms — slow to 1x or 1.25x and keep the replay button ready. The counter-intuitive part: the same article can need different speeds by section. A narrative intro flies at 1.75x; the terms-and-conditions bit crawls at 0.9x. Don't treat speed as a single setting — treat it as a control you adjust while listening, the way you'd adjust a thermostat rather than set it once.

Build Speed-Resistant Scripts

Speed amplifies bad writing. Long sentences and dependent clauses become hard to follow at 1.5x, so the text you feed the TTS matters as much as the speed.
