Text restoration focuses on legibility — the contrast between ink and paper, the sharpness of letterforms, the removal of visual noise that obscures characters. A restored photo should look like the original scene. A restored document should read like the original text. The visual quality is secondary to the reading quality.
This means text restoration uses different techniques: contrast maximization (make the ink as dark as possible and the paper as light as possible, without creating artifacts at the boundary), stain reduction (water stains, coffee stains, and age discoloration are noise — they should be suppressed, not preserved), and edge preservation (letterform edges must remain sharp — blurring the edges of a 'c' can turn it into an 'o' or an 'e', changing the word's meaning).

Some damage is beyond restoration. If the ink has completely faded to the color of the paper, no contrast enhancement can recover it — the information is physically gone.
