You design a t-shirt graphic on a digital canvas — 2000×2000 pixels at 72 DPI. It looks sharp on screen. You upload it to a print-on-demand platform (Printful, Redbubble, Merch by Amazon). The platform rejects it: "Image resolution too low. Minimum 300 DPI at print size required." Your 2000×2000 pixel image, printed at 10 inches wide, is only 200 DPI — below the 300 DPI threshold. The print will look soft, pixelated, and unprofessional.

DPI (dots per inch) is a print measurement, not a screen measurement. A 2000×2000 pixel image printed at 10 inches wide = 200 DPI (2000 pixels ÷ 10 inches). The same image printed at 5 inches wide = 400 DPI (2000 pixels ÷ 5 inches). The same image printed at 20 inches wide = 100 DPI — too low for any print product.
The print-on-demand DPI requirements: 300 DPI for apparel (t-shirts, hoodies, tote bags — the fabric texture hides minor imperfections, but 300 DPI is the industry standard), 300 DPI for wall art (posters, canvas prints, framed prints — viewed up close, so resolution matters), and 150-200 DPI for phone cases and mugs (small print area, viewed from a distance, lower resolution acceptable).
The formula: Required pixels = Print size (inches) × DPI requirement. A 12×16 inch poster at 300 DPI requires 3600×4800 pixels. A 12×12 inch t-shirt graphic at 300 DPI requires 3600×3600 pixels. If your design is smaller than the required pixel dimensions, you need to upscale.
Step 1: Calculate the required resolution. Determine the print size and DPI requirement. Calculate the required pixels. If your design is below the requirement, note the upscaling factor needed. A 2000×2000 design that needs to be 3600×3600 requires a 1.8× upscale.
Step 2: Upscale with AI. Use the AI image upscaler to increase the resolution. If the upscaling factor is more than 4×, the AI will start to invent details that were not in the original design. A 500×500 design upscaled to 4000×4000 (8×) will show visible artifacts — smoothed textures, invented details, and a general "AI-enhanced" look that is noticeable in print. For extreme upscales, redesign the artwork at the target resolution. AI upscaling is best for 2×-4× increases. Beyond that, the quality degrades visibly.
