I tested three AI upscalers on photos, anime, and low-res screenshots. Real-ESRGAN, Topaz Gigapixel, and Waifu2x — each has strengths and blind spots.
I had a 400-pixel-wide product photo and needed it at 1600 pixels for a print catalog. Pixel stretching in Photoshop produced a blurry mess. AI upscaling was the answer — but which one?
I tested three AI upscalers on the same set of images: a product photo, an anime screenshot, a scanned old photograph, and a low-res logo. Here is what worked and what did not.
Real-ESRGAN: Open-source model from Tencent ARC lab. Trained on real-world degradations, not just synthetic downscaling. This matters because real low-res images have compression artifacts, sensor noise, and motion blur — not just fewer pixels. Our image upscaler uses Real-ESRGAN with dedicated Photo and Anime modes.
Topaz Gigapixel AI: Paid desktop software ($99). The gold standard for professional photo upscaling. Uses proprietary models trained on a massive dataset of high-res photographs.
Waifu2x: Open-source, originally built for anime and manga upscaling. Uses convolutional neural networks. Free, web-based versions exist. Very popular in the anime community.
Real-ESRGAN (Photo mode): The result was sharp but natural. Fabric texture on the product was reconstructed convincingly — you could see the weave pattern that was invisible at 400px. Edges were clean with no haloing. The color and contrast stayed consistent with the original.
Topaz: Slightly more detail in the shadows. The fabric texture was marginally better — you could count individual threads. But the difference was subtle. For $99, it should be better, and it is, but not dramatically.
Waifu2x (Photo mode): Over-processed. The image looked like someone cranked the sharpness slider to maximum. Artifacts on edges — haloing around the product outline. This tool is not made for photos, and it shows.
Winner: Real-ESRGAN for value. Topaz for absolute quality if you do this professionally.
Real-ESRGAN (Anime mode): Clean lines, flat colors preserved. The character outlines stayed sharp without becoming jagged. Background gradients were smooth — no banding.
Topaz: Good, but the default model is not optimized for 2D art. You need to switch to the Art/CG model, which helps but still produces slightly soft lines compared to specialized anime upscalers.
Waifu2x: This is what it was built for. The character lines were crisp. Color regions stayed flat (no texture hallucination on skin tones). Waifu2x won this round — it is purpose-built for anime and manga, and it delivered.
Winner: Waifu2x for pure anime. Real-ESRGAN Anime mode is close second and also handles mixed content better.
Real-ESRGAN (Photo mode): Reconstructed facial details well. The film grain was handled naturally — not removed, not amplified. The photo looked like it was originally scanned at 2400px rather than upscaled from 600px.
Topaz: Best face reconstruction. The Face Recovery model is Topaz's killer feature — it identified faces in the scanned photo and reconstructed them with remarkable detail. Eyes were sharp. Skin texture was realistic. This is where Topaz justifies its price.
Waifu2x: Did not handle the film grain well. Treated it as noise and over-smoothed the result. Faces lost detail. The photo looked plastic.
Winner: Topaz for face-heavy restoration. Real-ESRGAN for overall natural result. If you need facial detail, combine photo restoration (GFPGAN face enhancement) with upscaling.
Photos and real-world images: Real-ESRGAN Photo mode. It handles natural textures, film grain, and compression artifacts better than the alternatives. Our image upscaler uses this model — 2x or 4x, 2 credits per image.
Anime, manga, digital art: Waifu2x or Real-ESRGAN Anime mode. Both work well; Waifu2x has a slight edge on pure anime. Use Anime mode if you are upscaling mixed content.
Professional photo restoration with faces: Topaz Gigapixel. The Face Recovery model is worth the $99 if you regularly restore old photos with faces. For occasional use, combine Real-ESRGAN upscaling with GFPGAN face enhancement.
Quick, free, no install: Our image upscaler. Photo and Anime modes cover both use cases. No desktop software to install. No resolution caps.
