Social Media Aspect Ratios by Platform

Instagram Feed: 1:1 (1080×1080) — the safe default. 4:5 (1080×1350) — the maximum vertical ratio before Instagram crops. This is the preferred ratio for most creators because it takes up more screen space. Never use 16:9 horizontal on Instagram feed — it looks tiny. Instagram Stories/Reels: 9:16 (1080×1920) — full screen vertical.

Twitter/X: 16:9 (1200×675) for single images. 1:1 (1200×1200) also works. Twitter's in-feed preview crops everything to 16:9, so 1:1 images get cropped left and right. Twitter cards (link previews): 2:1 (1200×600) — this is the standard for link preview images.

LinkedIn: 1.91:1 (1200×627) — standard link share image. 1:1 (1080×1080) works for feed posts. LinkedIn's feed crop varies by device, so keep important content centered.

Facebook: 1.91:1 (1200×630) for link shares. 1:1 or 4:5 for feed posts. Facebook aggressively compresses images, so generate at higher resolution and let their compression do the damage.

YouTube Thumbnail: 16:9 (1280×720) — the only aspect ratio that works. Anything else gets letterboxed with black bars. Text should be large (viewers see thumbnails at postage-stamp size on mobile).

Pinterest: 2:3 (1000×1500) — the standard Pin ratio. Vertical images dominate Pinterest; horizontal images are basically invisible.

Generating the Right Aspect Ratio with AI

Most AI image generators default to 1:1 (square) or let you specify a ratio. Composition Tips by Ratio

1:1 (Square): Center your subject. Symmetry works well. Don't put important details near the edges — some platforms (Twitter) crop square images to 16:9 in preview.

16:9 (Landscape): Use the rule of thirds — place your subject at the left or right third line, not center. The wide format gives you negative space for text overlays.

9:16 (Vertical): Place your subject in the upper third (eyes naturally go there first on vertical screens). Leave the bottom third relatively clear for UI elements, captions, and interaction buttons.

4:5 (Portrait): The sweet spot for feed posts — taller than square, not as extreme as 9:16. Subject in the upper-middle, breathing room at the bottom.
